For the month of April I will be blogging alphabetically with the theme of Winnipeg versus Davao City. Not to prove a winner but simply to explore the differences and similarities between my home town and my current location.
N is for Name!
Bienvenue à Winnipeg! |
I've known for ages that Winnipeg comes from the Cree and Ojibwa word for "muddy waters". (Wi-nipe-k or wiinibig.) I think the lake was named fist and the city after the lake. The rivers are also very muddy. Winnipeg has many nick-names: Winterpeg, River City, Peg City...
Davao is also named after the aboriginal words for the river that runs through it. There are many people groups from this area and the name can be: Duhwow, Davau, Dabu, Davoh or in Cebuano and Tagalog; Dabaw. The meaning being "beyond the high grounds".
